Genre Research: Split
Split is another American horror-thriller film that was made in 2016. It was the second addition to the Unbreakable series which was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Split is about a man who is diagnosed with 23 different personalities and abducts young girls and keeps them in his basement. His therapist continues to look deeper into his mental disorder and uncovers the emergence of a 24th personality. In the movie, the girls try to escape before this 24th persona known as "The Beast" comes to the surface.
1. What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
The element that Split had within the thriller genre is internal conflict. As the man has a personality disorder, it is almost inevitable that the multiple personalities will argue with one another. This directly causes the man to go through multiple internal conflicts. At one point in the movie one of his personalities named Hedwig, a nine-year-old boy, was trying to help the girl escape. He often time told information that he was not supposed to tell. Hedwig would not only dispute with the other personalities but with himself. Another example of internal conflict was when the man came into his real fragile personality and told the girl to kill him. This shows how the man has been battling with himself so much to the point that he is willing to die. The aspect of internal conflict played a huge role throughout this movie and increased the overall suspense in the film.
2. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
The element of the genre that I liked in the film was the plot twist. Throughout the majority of the movie, the man is known to have 23 different personalities diagnosed by his therapist. Towards the end of the film, as the therapist makes her way to his house to share this information, she witnessed the 24th personality called "The Beast" in person and was killed by it. The 24th personality was a big plot twist since this one was way different from the other ones, animal-like, and was ready to kill. With this twist in the plot, as the audience, I was on the edge of my seat wondering if the abducted girls would escape. This added suspense works in the favor of a thriller and makes it more enjoyable.
3. What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
Although this movie did incorporate some violent aspects within it which I normally do not favor the most, I found myself not being bothered by it as much as I normally would. The plot twist did its job effectively to the point where I was more so enjoying the movie than thinking about the gore. This film was extremely consistent and was very intriguing. It represented the elements within the thriller genre and was a joy to watch.
