Genre Research: Thriller
I have finally decided on the genre I will be doing for my opening sequence. The genre I selected or was more so prompted to do is a thriller! A thriller is a work of fiction that can be described by the moods they create. This can include but is not limited to the feelings of suspense, anticipation, surprise, excitement, and anxiety. Thrillers rarely include comedic features and it is driven by strong suspenseful plots, conflict, plot twists, tension, and more. Although thrillers have a sense of darkness to them, they are not necessarily the same as horror films. The horror genre aims to incite fear in the audience while a thriller requires some thinking along with explanations to incite excitement in the audience. The ultimate goal in which a thriller is supposed to achieve is to take the audience on an emotional rollercoaster forcing them to be on the edge of their seats the entire time. The pitch I ended up selecting for the final task is about two strangers who happen to meet and start appearing in dream realities of each other's lives during crucial moments. While they believe they are just having bad nightmares, the things that happen in this dream reality come to pass in reality. Will these two complete strangers be able to save each other in the end? I figured that my pitch would fit the thriller genre the most since it is somewhat suspenseful and already leaves you wondering what they will end up doing and what will end up happening to the two. In the beginning, I thought that this would fall under more of an action and adventure genre since it would incorporate some of the characteristics within it. This genre combines both of the elements of action and adventure. It can be described as featuring subjects who will partake in dangerous and exciting activities which will end up putting them on a journey filled with problem-solving. I still believe that this is a genre that my pitch could somewhat be categorized within. But as I continued to think more about it, I decided to go with a thriller since it isn't as narrow as the action and adventure genre. Since thriller is such a broad genre, I think that by doing this I will have more flexibility when I begin storyboarding for my opening sequence. I am pleased with the genre I have decided on. I think that this fits my pitch best and will be a very fun and intriguing category. But my research regarding genres is not over just yet. In the next couple of blogs, we will discuss some of my favorite movies within thrillers. Don't go anywhere!
