Genre Research: Action

I decided to begin my research for the final task starting with the action genre. My main goal was to examine the different conventions within the genre which commonly occur. This included things like the lighting, angles, camera movements, sound, mise en scene, and the elements of action films. With lighting, I found that it is very important to have the best lighting in order to produce the right atmosphere and focus for a scene. The most used lighting throughout action films is lowkey lighting, high-key lighting, and three-point lighting. I then researched further into the different angles and how they can affect how a scene is interpreted by the audience. Having a good angle is necessary because they can portray what the characters are going through and how they're feeling. High angles, low angles, and canted dutch angles are seen in many different action movies. Similar to the angles, the camera movements in a film express emotion and allows scenes to be more realistic. A plethora of camera movements is seen in action films such as handheld, crane, zoom, and track to name a few. During my research, I found out how important it is to utilize sound in an action movie. Sound can enhance the storytelling aspect of the film and when used in the correct way, scenes can come to life. My favorite aspect of sound in action movies has to be the incidental music played in the background of an intense fight scene. Then there is mise en scene which includes all things from costumes, props, makeup, acting, and setting. Mis en Scene contributes to the visual aspect of films. Finally, I dived into some of the elements incorporated in action films. This includes high energy, action sequences, montages, plot twists, and much more.
I had a great time researching and creating a PowerPoint for this genre. Not to mention, I learned so much while completing it! The action genre sure is captivating. But this isn't the end of my research on genres please stay tuned for more exciting findings. I'll see you next time!
