Title Research: Get Out

1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?
In the opening sequence, the title that is shown first is the production company named Universal Pictures. After this, the subsidiary or daughter company, Blumhouse/ QC Entertainment, is displayed. Monkeypaw Productions is a company in association with the daughter company and is shown directly after. Next came the name of the producer, writer, and film director of the movie. The name of the movie then appears on the screen and is followed by the names of the actors within the film. When the names of the actors are complete, the next list of names includes the person who casts the actors, the music supervisors, the costume designer, the editor, the production designer, and the photography director. The last names included in the opening sequence are the co-producers, executive producers, the director, and the writer.

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The images which are prioritized in the opening sequence are the first official part of the setting which is at the couple's home. In these shots, the camera slowly zooms in and out on areas around the apartment. The home looks normal and nothing seems to be out of place. There is a black and white photograph shown which stands out because the furniture around it all has color to it. The next shot that was prioritized is when the boyfriend is looking through the black and white pictures on a camera. It can be inferred from this that he is not a photographer, but his girlfriend is. Lastly, the scene where the two of them kiss is focused on to clearly show that they are in a relationship.

3. What connotations do these images carry?
These images carry positive connotations since they show what seems to be a happy couple. Nothing within the opening scene suggests that there are any problems are anything suspicious going on between the two.

4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
The film somewhat established a feeling of the thriller genre when the boyfriend was looking through the camera roll. Although the pictures were flipped through very quickly, the audience could take away that it is a different type of eerie photography that she does. Other than this scene, the film does not show anything that would deem it to elicit any excitement, suspense, or anticipation.

5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
I do not think there was a direct strategy in the opening sequence that would ensure the film appears to the target audience. As mentioned, there was nothing in this first couple of minutes of the movie that would suggest any suspicion amongst the couple. The only aspect that could bring about some uneasiness is the title of the film.

6. How has technology been used effectively?
Technology has been used effectively in terms of the editing style which was utilized in the opening sequence. Crosscut editing was used when the boyfriend was at home shaving and when the girlfriend was out buying desserts. This showed that these two actions were happening simultaneously but did not suggest anything out of the ordinary since they were both going about their day.
