Preparing to Film my Final Task: The Music Search

As of right now, I have determined the actors, costumes, props, film site, and filming equipment for my final task. While deciding and preparing these certain aspects for filming, I realized there was something important that I had put no thought into yet. I did not think about what type of music I want, what feeling I wanted the music to elicit, where I would get the music from, and so and so forth. Music is key when it comes to producing a great film. It is a precursor for the events to come, influences the emotions of the audience, and adds a realistic and lively feeling to a film. On the surface, music may not seem to be that important, but it can directly affect and make or break the overall experience the audience has. For my opening sequence, music is incorporated as one of my characters is riding his bicycle. Since these scenes are aiming to be upbeat and energetic, I want the music to further enforce that mood. The music is especially important here since there is no dialogue during the scenes. The only way I will be able to correctly display the mood of the scenes is through the actor's facial expressions and by my music selection. The next big decision I had to make was whether I wanted it to have lyrics or for the song to just be an instrumental. At first, I wanted to use popular songs that featured complex raps and beats. I felt that these types of songs would give off the vibe that I wanted. The only problem I would have is that these songs are copyrighted. In order to use these songs in my film, I would need to get permission from the company. Due to the fact that I am always changing my mind, I felt that it would be best to utilize free music. By using free music I can change the song I would like up until the last moments of editing. If I were to select a song and obtain the rights to use it, I could not change the song to another one if needed. So through much consideration along with research, I decided that it would be best for me to use a free instrumental for my film. Although going the free route may pose some difficultly in finding the right song, I will not be discouraged. I have already begun my search to look for the perfect song to accurately express the emotion of the scenes. The website I am using to find royalty-free music is www.bensound.com. This website has a great variety of music that is all free and downloadable to use. I have even found some songs that I like and have bookmarked for my reference in the near future. I will continue looking into music throughout the production process of my film. I can't wait to see what song I will end up choosing!
