Planning Blog For the Final Task: Schedule, Location, Participants, Health & Safety

Image
Schedule  On February 16th- 21st, I decided on my pitch for the final task, researched different genres, focused my research on the conventions within the thriller genre, and conducted title research. Once I completed researching, I began to draft out my scripts. On February 25th- 27th, I collected all of my ideas and formulated a sound and dialogue script and shooting script. On February 28th- March 2nd, I will work on creating the titles and storyboard for my opening sequence. I plan on making my storyboard as detailed as possible so that I will be able to film and edit efficiently for this bigger project. On March 15th-19th, I will attempt to start filming my final task. During this time, I will create and use a filming schedule with my actors to ensure that nothing will interfere with the filming of the movie. I believe that if I would like to start filming before spring break, the majority of filming during this time will have to be done on the weekend. During the week of spri...

Title Research: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Image
1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?  During the opening scene, the title of the movie fades in and then flashes out of the screen. The names of the film director, the people who did the screenplay, and the screen story were shown after the movie title. Then the series which the movie was based on and the creator appeared quickly after. Next were the names of the co-producers, executive producers, photography director, the production designer, the costume designer, the editor, and the music supervisors. Following the people involved in the production, were the names of the actors in the movie. Shown alone was the name of the person who picked out the actors. This is the first opening sequence I saw where the casting director was not on the list of the other people involved in the making of the film. The parent company, CBS Films, and the subsidiary company, Entertainment One were displayed on the screen together. Rolling Hills, Starlight, A Hivemind /1212 Ente...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
On the home page of this second website, there is one drop-down menu, a designer and studio section, and a search engine. The first drop-down menu shows the six different categories the site has for title sequences. They are separated by featured films, tv shows, event titles, student projects, video games, and French Fridays. The designer and studios section lists out the names of all of the different creators and companies. The search engine was the same as the last one as it allowed you search terms and would show results for related title sequences. This website was fairly similar to the last one I conducted research on. Since this site had a category for tv shows, I decided to do some brief research on the title sequences there. I learned about the distinct difference between title sequences in movies and television shows. This that in a tv series, the sequence is often repeated and has the chance to make the show more memorable as it is repeated. Whereas in films, the title ...

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
When I first opened the website I saw two drop-down menus, a search engine, and the most recent publication below those. I decided to begin my exploration of the page with the first drop-down menu which showed recent, recommended, classic, all titles, and all features of title sequences. The second drop-down menu, it showed a list of designers and studios of titles in no specific order. I then moved on to the search engine where I tested a random word to see what would come up. I searched up the word red and an abundance of results came up for title sequences, designers, and features that had to do or correlated with the color. Following this, I returned back to the home page to briefly read over the latest publication and see what features are included in the articles. On the left side, there is information regarding the title sequence such as the film date, film director, studio, styles, category, and much more. On the right side, there is information regarding the article itself whi...

Genre Research: Split

Image
Split is another American horror-thriller film that was made in 2016. It was the second addition to the Unbreakable series which was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Split is about a man who is diagnosed with 23 different personalities and abducts young girls and keeps them in his basement. His therapist continues to look deeper into his mental disorder and uncovers the emergence of a 24th personality. In the movie, the girls try to escape before this 24th persona known as "The Beast" comes to the surface. 1. What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The element that Split had within the thriller genre is internal conflict. As the man has a personality disorder, it is almost inevitable that the multiple personalities will argue with one another. This directly causes the man to go through multiple internal conflicts. At one point in the movie one of his personalities named Hedwig, a nine-year-old boy, was trying to...

Genre Research: Bird Box

Image
Bird Box is a Netflix original movie that came out in December of 2018. This film was very popular and many people were watching and talking about it. It can be described as a post-apocalyptic horror-thriller film. Bird Box is about a mother who aims to protect herself and her children from an evil entity that pushes people to suicide once they look upon it. The women and the two children have to travel through the woods blindfolded to escape the entity and secure refuge.  1.What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The element of the thriller genre which Bird Box included in the film is incidental music. Sound, in general, is very important to a film because it can make it more dramatic, emotional, and ultimately bring a scene to life. I found this type of sound to be very effective in creating a somewhat lonely and eerie vibe throughout the movie. It was also effective in aiding in the advancement of scenes and the storyline. I fe...

Genre Research: Us

Image
Us is an American horror-thriller film that was created in 2019. It was written and directed by Jordan Peele who is known for his other film Get Out which came out two years prior. Us is about a family who went on a beach vacation at the home where the mother grew up. The mother is haunted by her traumatic experience and worries that something bad is going to happen. This becomes reality with the appearance of the family's doppelgangers who terrorize them.  1. What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The element that Us had that I would like to incorporate in my final task is the intensity of the suspense. The movie starts out with a clip of the younger version of the mother seeing her doppelganger and then cuts to the present day where the family is seen in normalcy. I feel like this elicited a lot of anticipation from the audience even though the movie had only just begun. This was a great quality to have since the main goal f...

Genre Research: Thriller

Image
I have finally decided on the genre I will be doing for my opening sequence. The genre I selected or was more so prompted to do is a thriller! A thriller is a work of fiction that can be described by the moods they create. This can include but is not limited to the feelings of suspense, anticipation, surprise, excitement, and anxiety. Thrillers rarely include comedic features and it is driven by strong suspenseful plots, conflict, plot twists, tension, and more. Although thrillers have a sense of darkness to them, they are not necessarily the same as horror films. The horror genre aims to incite fear in the audience while a thriller requires some thinking along with explanations to incite excitement in the audience. The ultimate goal in which a thriller is supposed to achieve is to take the audience on an emotional rollercoaster forcing them to be on the edge of their seats the entire time. The pitch I ended up selecting for the final task is about two strangers who happen to meet and ...

Genre Research: Comedy & Drama

In continuation with my research on genres, I decided to research comedy and drama. Some of my most favorite movies fall under these genres so I was very excited to educate myself further on them. My goal to learn more about the conventions which commonly occur throughout the genres remained the same from the previous research I did on action films. To begin, I started out with comedy and found that this was the genre where high-key lighting is widespread. High-key lighting increases the brightness within a scene which is beneficial to comedies because it helps maintain an upbeat mood to go along with the humor that is already there. Another element that is important in comedic films is sound. From dietetic to ambient sound, this aspect of this genre can make or break the film. Sound can be very important in terms of adding humor to a movie. Some of the sounds used are the sound motif, ambient, diegetic, and non-diegetic sound. The last feature of significance that I will mention from ...

Genre Research: Action

I decided to begin my research for the final task starting with the action genre. My main goal was to examine the different conventions within the genre which commonly occur. This included things like the lighting, angles, camera movements, sound, mise en scene, and the elements of action films. With lighting, I found that it is very important to have the best lighting in order to produce the right atmosphere and focus for a scene. The most used lighting throughout action films is lowkey lighting, high-key lighting, and three-point lighting. I then researched further into the different angles and how they can affect how a scene is interpreted by the audience. Having a good angle is necessary because they can portray what the characters are going through and how they're feeling. High angles, low angles, and canted dutch angles are seen in many different action movies. Similar to the angles, the camera movements in a film express emotion and allows scenes to be more realistic. A plet...

My Pitch

Image
Pitch #1: Two strangers cross paths never expecting to see one another again, but what happens when they appear in crucial parts of each other lives, through a dream version of reality that has consequences, and have to take turns saving each other from disastrous events to transpire. Will these strangers be able to save each other?  Pitch #2: The people around her are disappearing one by one and when they return they look like the people who were once there but acted out of the ordinary. Who are these new people, were there people to even begin with, or was it all in her head?  When I first heard about the project the first pitch came to mind naturally as I enjoy movies and shows that incorporate alternate realities that end up playing into reality. The second pitch came about as I began to think deeper and explore the suspenseful aspect of the thriller genre further. This genre is among some of my favorites so I knew that I wanted my pitches to reflect the characteristics o...

Starting The Final Task

Image
Hello, it has been a while since we last spoke. My name is Serena Nixon and I am now 17 years old. I am considered to be the middle child as I have one older sister and one younger brother. I enjoy listening to music, sewing, painting, and watching tv when I have free time. After I graduate from Fort Lauderdale High School, I plan on attending college and going to medical school to become a dermatologist. Once I reach this goal, I plan to open my own office and start my own skincare line. Now that I have briefly refreshed your memory about me, let's talk about the final project. This has to be one of the projects that I have always dreamed of doing. When I was told we were creating the first two minutes of our own movie I instantly got excited. My interest in movies and their production has always been fairly great. With this interest and a combination of my active imagination, I often created movie type scenarios in my head. I would envision different scenes and how I would go abo...
